On 7 March 2017 our Executive Director, Prof Lies Geris, was invited to attend one day meeting at the Joint Research Centre, Ispra (IT).
This round table event was designed to present the ongoing activities of three organisations, the Virtual Physiological Human institute, the Avicenna Alliance (AA) and the European Union Reference Laboratory for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EURL ECVAM), with the final aim to find possible common grounds of collaboration. Also Amalia Vlad from the European Commission DG CNECT attended the event.
The day started with presentations on the mission, goals and accomplishments from the VPHi, the AA, DG CNECT and EURL ECVAM. From the presentations it came out clear that there are many parallels between the in silico medicine community and the toxicology community and this event was a big opportunity to learn from each other’s experience and create synergies.
Specific follow-up points were identified related to the AOP (adverse outcome pathways) portal (https://aopwiki.org/) and the VVUQ (verification, validation and uncertainty quantification). The VPHi will also be present during the JRC Summer School on alternatives approaches for risk assessment in May 2017.
