The Commission appoints Jean-Pierre Bourguignon as interim President of the European Research Council

On 24 July 2020, the Commission appointed Jean-Pierre Bourguignon as interim President of the European Research Council. Prof. Bourguignon took over on 27 July and will be in office until the next Presidential election.

Jean-Pierre Bourguignon was the President of the European Research Council from January 2014 until December 2019. Prof. Bourguignon was also the Chair for the first ERC mathematics peer review panel in 2007. Prior to that, he was the Director of the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHÉS) from 1994 to 2013. 

Having headed the ERC from 2014 to 2019, Jean-Pierre Bourguignon’s reappointment comes at a crucial moment when strong leadership is needed in the context of ongoing negotiations on the next EU seven-year budget for research and innovation as well as the forthcoming transition to a new Programme for Research and Innovation, Horizon Europe

Given his understanding of the scientific and policy landscapes, the appointment of Prof. Bourguignon sends a positive signal to the research community.
