Digital tools are set to become increasingly central in the future of healthcare, playing a vital role in understanding and managing health. Thanks to computer models, we can now present, diagnose, forecast, and treat diseases in ways that were unimaginable just a few years ago—this is also known as in silico medicine.
Following the final EDITH Ecosystem Meeting, a public event was organised by the Universiteit van Amsterdam to actively involve and engage the wider community in shaping the future of healthcare. The event, called “The Twin Within: Revolutionising Healthcare”, was led by Liesbet Geris (Professor of Biomechanics and Computational Tissue Engineering at ULiege and KU Leuven, and Director of the Virtual Physiological Human Institute) and moderated by Davide Montesarchio (Science Communicator at the Virtual Physiological Human Institute).
During the event, Liesbet Geris provided a straightforward introduction to key concepts of in silico medicine and the virtual human twin. She explained what a digital twin is, how it can be used in healthcare, and the technologies that make it possible. Additionally, the event addressed the societal aspects of in silico medicine, including ethical and legal challenges. Also, it emphasised the importance of involving all relevant stakeholders, such as patients and clinicians, in developing a functional virtual human twin.
