PhD and postdoc opportunities - July 2024

New calls with deadlines end August-early September

Research Associate in Preclinical Musculoskeletal Imaging and Biomechanics
Faculty of Health, School of Medicine and Population Health, University of Sheffield

This highly interdisciplinary Research Associate position will advance our understanding of the effect of biomechanical and pharmacological treatments for Osteoporosis (OP) in a mouse model. The position is within Insigneo and is funded as part of a project selected by the ERC-Consolidator and funded by the EPSRC that aims to develop and validate new multiscale computational models for optimising treatments for OP. This part of the project is focused on the collection of experimental and imaging data to inform and validate the models.

DOCTORAL POSITION ON MECHANOBIOLOGY OF BIOENGINEERED MICROVASCULAR NETWORKS
Mechanobiology & Tissue Engineering research group - KU Leuven

Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCM) is a microvascular disease characterized by abnormal brain microcapillary beds resulting from mutations in CCM-complex genes, with no current cure.

While we have recently demonstrated the significance of aberrant cellular forces for CCM lesion formation in 3D endothelial monoculture systems, more complex co-culture systems are needed to better mimic the environment of in vivo lesions. This project centers on deciphering the intricate interactions between endothelial cells (ECs) and pericytes within an advanced vessel-on-a-chip model.

Postdoctoral Researcher – Artificial Intelligence for Synthetic Data Generation in Biomedicine
Barcelona Supercomputing Center

The Machine Learning for Biomedical Research unit at the BSC, led by Dr. Davide Cirillo, is currently offering a postdoctoral researcher position. This role focuses on employing Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to synthesize various types of biomedical data, including images, genomic sequences, time series, and texts. Synthetic data generation in biomedicine involves creating artificial datasets that mimic real biological data, which is crucial for enhancing privacy protection, increasing data availability, reducing biases, ensuring regulatory compliance, and facilitating more robust and cost-efficient research and development. This initiative is part of a collaborative project supported by an EU public-private partnership, aimed at advancing the frontiers of synthetic data generation in biomedical research.

Software engineering / Modular code for surgical planning
Centre Inria de Saclay

In the Simbiotx team, we build virtual human twins for advancing disease understanding and treatment planning. Our software can simulate the entire blood circulation. Our next step is to build it into a package that is usable for many user types, fast to personalize it for each patient, and flexible to support more use cases.

We are seeking a talented software engineer to develop the new generation of our cardiovascular modeling software. Your mission will involve laying out the foundational elements and collaboratively develop a new version of this software.

PhD position – a haptic interface for a robotic human extender
Department of Mechanical Engineering at KU Leuven

This PhD project will focus on the haptic interface, that accurately emulates the extender’s end-effector architecture on the user’s hands, being able to render both kinesthetic and tactile information to the user, in a wearable form factor. Two global functions need to be met: (kinesthetics) capturing inputs from the user that are translated to the degrees of freedom of the robot, (tactile) feeding information (forces, contact pressure) from the robotic end effector back to the user. While the kinesthetic interface will necessitate solutions that can be made using conventional production methods, the tactile interface will necessitate manufacturing technologies that match the spatial acuity of the user’s skin.
