On 10 March 2014, the Vice-President of the European Commission, Ms. Neelie Kroes delivered a speech on the intrinsic role of technology in securing our digital economy during the CEBIT, Cyber Security Conference held in Hanover.
Whilst Ms. Kroes speech focused primarily on the internet and the need to foster trust and safety in the sharing of data in the wake of recent scandals, the Commissioner placed a large emphasis on the need to embrace technological advancements for the sake of Industry. Ms. Kroes also lamented the absence of connectivity between technology and democracy today and indicated the Commissions eagerness to reconnect the pair.
