ECR publishes an in-depth analysis of research projects funded under the Horizon 2020

On 14 July 2022 a new in-depth analysis of all research projects funded by the European Research Council under the Horizon 2020 research and innovation framework programme has been made public.

The study - “Mapping of ERC Frontier Research” - includes thirty factsheets showcasing the rich diversity of the ECR-funded research projects, including highlighting computer modelling for health.

34% of the analyzed ERC-funded projects will likely contribute to health policies, including in cancer, brain and human mind research; one in ten projects addressed problems linked to the digital transition, half of which were in the area of artificial intelligence.

In the factsheet “ERC frontier research contribution to EU4Health”, computational modelling is mentioned as the main methodological development in projects relevant for the selected EU4Health areas, with a specific focus on in silico model and machine learning.

Key highlights

  • The mapping of all the 6,707 research projects funded by ERC between 2014 and 2020 was led by the ERC Scientific Council’s Working Group “Science behind the Projects”.
  • The findings show the breadth of the ERC-funded research and its distinctive aspects: the factsheets cover the most common disciplines (such as cell biology or economics), popular topics (e.g., algorithm development and cultural heritage), and new methods or instruments (e.g., in the area of computational modelling and simulations in the computational protein prediction).
  • The analysis emphasizes the increasing recognition of the health potential of computer modelling.
