On 29 November 2021, the Council and European Parliament agreed to renew the strengthened mandate of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC)
This agreement is relevant because the ECDC Parliamentary legislative file includes three amendments recommended by the Avicenna Alliance emphasising the importance of computer modelling and simulation, in silico, and artificial intelligence in robust disease monitoring and analysis infrastructure.
Thw agreement is currently informal; once both institutions formally approve the agreement the adoption procedure will begin.
The ECDC has shown that it is already willing to utilise in silico evidence. In the 2 December threat assessment brief regarding the new Omicron coronavirus variant, in silico analysis was used to assess the ability of PCR tests to identify the variant.
